Mental Health Resources
Make that first step today.
Below is a list of my favorite mental health resources! I am not a mental health expert, so everything shared on this blog is solely based on my personal experiences.
If you are in need of professional mental health care (which is something I highly recommend for all individuals), check out the FREE resources I've linked below and start your journey today.
Mental Health Resources
National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI)
NAMI is the holy grail of mental health care. NAMI is a nationwide organization that strives to educate all individuals, families, and educators on mental illness, advocate for those struggling with mental illness, support anyone dealing with mental hardships, and lead communities in public awareness events, group discussions, and outreach programs. So basically, NAMI does it ALL!
Why do I love NAMI so much?
They have 600 affiliate groups, meaning there is likely a NAMI group in your town! Affiliate groups host community events and offer a wide variety of support groups to help people overcome mental illness together.
All of NAMI's resources are FREE so anyone, regardless of socioeconomic class, can receive the care they need. They have excellent educational programs online, they have their own 24-hour HelpLine, thousands of mental health blog posts, online events, support groups and SO much more.
NAMI is inclusive of all individuals. They have countless events that empower underrepresented groups and allow different perspectives to be heard. They are extremely dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion and constantly strive to make all groups feel valued and respected.
Psychology Today- Therapist Finder
Think you need a new therapist, teletherapist, psychiatrist, treatment center, or support group? Well, then this website is for you! Finding a therapist you connect with can be difficult, but this resource makes it much more straightforward. Just put in your zip code, select what type of treatment you are looking for, and BAM! There are hundreds of mental health care professionals on this site, along with photos, their treatment approach, their specialties, pricing, what insurance they take, and ways to get connected with them. I highly recommend spending some time reading their bios to see if they'd be a good fit for you and your mental health goals.
The SelfWork Podcast
Want free therapy that you can access any time? Give this podcast a listen (available on all podcast platforms)! In these 20-30 minute podcasts Dr. Margaret Rutherfod, a psychologist with over 25 years of experience, teaches listeners step by step ways to change thought processes and overcome life's challenges. She has hundreds of amazing podcasts covering many different topics (i.e., how to love yourself and others, abusive relationship advice, gratitude practice, facing change, depression, and many more.) I highly recommend listening to her if you do not have the means or desire to go to in-person therapy!
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Hotline
Do you or a loved one need to talk to someone now? SAMHSA’s National Helpline is a free, confidential, 24/7, 365-day-a-year treatment referral and information service (in English and Spanish) for individuals and families facing mental and/or substance use disorders. Give them a call today!
